Mr. Brown - Physical Education Assignment One

 Dear parents/guardians,

My name is Mr. Brown and I am currently in charge of the Year 10 Physical Education class for the duration of 2019. Throughout the previous month, students have been exposed to a number of different physical activities to enhance their learning of human movement and the benefits of physical activity. More specifically, students have had the opportunity to participate in a number of gender-neutral sports that promote the inclusivity and engagement of all students. To foster an authentic learning space, all students are provided with a hands-on experience into the movement demands of sport.

To compliment the students’ practical understanding of sport, we have recently began a unit investigating human physiology, to unravel, how us, as humans, produce energy needed to perform movements. Thus, students were provided with learning in regards to the three energy systems and how they work in unison to effectively regulate the energy output of the body. This topic of learning can be related to not only sports, but all matters of daily life – walking, reading, jumping, cooking, etc.

This week, students will be given the first assignment for this unit – Analysing the Three Energy Systems through ICT. In this assignment, students will be displaying their understanding of the three energy systems through a practical basketball game. The assignment will consist of two sections:

1/ Students will investigate literature surrounding the three energy systems and their impact on performance.
2/ Students will compare and analyse their own heart rate results from a game of basketball to that of a professional athletes. From this analysis, students will then explain why there heart rate was greater at certain stages of the game to make accurate estimations of the specific movements being conducted at certain times.

In this assignment, students will be asked to utilise a range of ICT to develop and conduct research for the assessment. Students will be supplied with an appropriate amount of time to access computers and/or laptops as well as library time to investigate literature. In addition, to record heart rates for analysis, students will be using the ‘Polar Team Application’ and ‘Polar Heart Rate Monitors’.

In alignment with this unit, students will also be assessed on their ability to use ICT ethically within the classroom. Over the past week, the students and I have explored the notion of intellectual property (IP) and the importance of accurately attributing and referencing information constructed by others. As they progress through their assignment, students will gain valuable researching skills including the identification of reliable and trustworthy sources, and develop a firm understanding of the legalities of ownership.

The students assessment will consist of multiple images, videos and literature to assist in demonstrating their understanding around human physiology. Their assessment will be used as an informative blog for individuals of all ages to access.

With consideration to the ICT General Capability of the Australian Curriculum, students will be applying social and ethical protocols and practices when using ICT.

You will notice below, I have attached the relevant rubric for ‘Analysing the Three Energy Systems through ICT’ assessment. Please note that at the bottom of the rubric, you will find the ICT general capability outlining the specific work needed to achieve certain levels of the standard. If you would like further information to assist your child, or have any questions regarding the rubric/assignment, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Great use of images, videos and graphics to support literature and analysis. Acknowledgement of ownership with all referencing measures used.
Proficient use of images, videos and graphics to support literature and analysis. Full acknowledgement of ownership and understanding of legal obligations. Referencing and attribution effectively used.
The Three Energy Systems and ICT: Exercise Physiology
Review on literature – explanation of three energy systems and their purpose.
Some understanding of the energy systems demonstrated. Basic explanation of their purpose.
Thorough understanding of the energy systems demonstrated. Sound explanation of their purpose.
Proficient understanding of the energy systems demonstrated with accurate references to their purpose.
Analysis of Heart Rate results and estimations justification.
Some relevant connections between student and elite athlete’s data. Sufficient justification also provided.
Multiple relevant connections between student and elite athlete’s data accompanied by an accurate justification.
Strong connections between student and athlete’s data. Connections accompanied by a clear and succinct justification.

As clearly noted above, students will be assessed on their ability to effectively attribute images and graphics collected to demonstrate their ability to abide by ownership obligations. In saying this, students at the standard level will be successful in understanding the difference between reliable and unreliable data, including the appropriate acknowledgment in regards to intellectual property and ownership of specific material. It is important to note that all students will be at different levels within this general capability; however, wherever the students find themselves among the continuum, it should never be perceived as a negative element - all standards provide further opportunity to learn. If you wish to assist your children in gaining a further understanding of this capability, please see the resources list I have provided at the bottom of the page or directly contact me for further information.

During the construction of the assignments, student will be using a range of communal devices provided by the school. Therefore, students will need to ensure that they are effectively using storage and security protocols appropriately to protect their own work whilst also respecting others’. The school drive will be the main source of storage for students but they are encouraged to back-up work on personal digital storage and protect accordingly.

Creative Commons: is a website that helps you legally share and distribute work of your own to be used by others. The site constructs an easy to use copyright license that allows students to share their own work and acknowledge others’ to produce a more equitable and innovative world. When using legal copyright on one’s own work, the individual has full control on how their work is going to be used by others bringing a sense of entitlement and choice to how the students would like to display their learning to the world.

The storage and collection of student materials will be placed within the school drive. More specifically, students have their own personalized folders to effectively protect their work. Teachers have no access to this drive, thus, students have full responsibility and ownership to how they wish to display it. To access this drive at school, students will need to be logged into their accounts through providing their school email address and the respective password they decided upon at the beginning of term.

Thank you for your time,
Mr. Brown
